Colors

In The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, the main character is a boy with a one of a kind perception of the world around him, that we may see as either clever or extremely pointless. In particular, one of his peculiarities is his ideas of good and bad colors. Red, to him is lucky, and yellow he despises. If anyone has ideas of the symbolism or their own take on what colors mean in real life, post here.

  1. Well, I'm confused becaues red is usually an aggravating color. But I think people with autism (isn't that what he has?) actually do see some colors to be different than others.

  2. I think what Haddon is illustrating is how we form our own interpretation of reality for ourselves, and most of the time there is no real reason, or at least, not a significant reason for our interpretation other than it fits how we look at the world to begin with. (Did that make any sense?) His seemingly sttrange behavior with colors -- assigning meaning to things we don't see meaning behind -- is an example of exactly what we all do when we assign meaning to things and then pretend the meaning we created is indeed a fact, and part of the rel nature of the object.

  3. I think I get that...I despise mushrooms, so the moment someone says something about mushrooms in a dish, I immediately start thinking of ways to get out of eating it, even if it could be a really delicious dish.
